“Ok, it was just my second date with this really sexy furball, and I felt a bit cheap to ask if she wanted to share a pizza and some greens. The “mice lovers” pizza looked sooo amazing. I also wanted to keep up with the macho image after I scared off Darwin the slimebag-fox, and won the heart of Penolope. It didn’t seem cool to ask for a puppy bag… doggy bag… whatever it is… you know what I mean. Afterall, a mighty weasel like myself should be able to eat a full pizza.”

Oh… Austin dear!

Everybody loves pizza, and there are toppings to suit all tastes – whether you are a meat lover, vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian, or just plain fussy, there is a pizza to match your preference. It is one of the most popular meals among buddies, lovers and families. Margherita pizza makes up about a third of kids’ diet. Even the low carb fanatics have reworked the pizza to reduce their guilty conscious, but don’t be fooled, in most combinations, a regular pizza is still a very large meal.

So why is a full pizza such a hearty meal? If this instance, Meghan Trainor may be spot on… it is “all about that bass”, ok “base” in the instance of the pizza. The base of a regular/medium size pizza is equivalent to about six to seven slices of bread. That is a lot of carbs to eat in one meal. If you consider that most pizzas are eaten in the evening, it’s a lot of carbs to consume at that time of the day. It is actually a lot of carbs to consume at any time of the day! If we slap on the toppings, the picture becomes even more scary. The average pizza slice weighs in at 300-400 calories. That may not sound so scary, if you just ate 1 or 1 ½ slices for a meal, but if you consider Austin’s macho date, he devoured between 2400 and 2800 calories in just one meal. As campaigners for small meals, that scares the living daylights out of us!

For some strange reason, a pizza is not considered a large meal, and most people eat a full pizza guiltfree. We wonder why? This may have to do with the origins of pizza. The Italian meal typically consisted of four courses – antipasti, primi (first course), secondi (main course), contorni (side dishes) and dolci (dessert). Pizza fell under the primi category along with pasta, risotto and polenta and was eaten before the main meal… mmm… so it is the fault of the Italians that we all got fat from eating so much pizza…
